Project Background

The Durban Climate Change Strategy (DCCS) was adopted by the eThekwini Municipality Council in 2015. Since then a range of activities and processes have been undertaken in the city to respond to the risks and opportunities presented by climate change. In 2019, Council approved the Durban Climate Action Plan (CAP). As it has been five years since the DCCS was adopted, the eThekwini Municipality has now initiated a process of reviewing and revising the DCCS (draft revised DCCS). This review process will seek to consolidate the DCCS and the CAP into an integrated implementation and monitoring framework.

An initial round of stakeholder consultations took place in February and March 2020. The purpose of these initial engagements was to discuss the process of reviewing the DCCS and to secure key input from stakeholders on issues that should be reflected in the updated DCCS. Minutes from this meeting can be downloaded here. Based on these comments the DCCS has been revised.

An online consultation event for the DCCS was then held on 27 July 2020. The purpose of this event is to report back to stakeholders on the major changes that were made to the DCCS since the previous events took place and to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to make written comments on the draft version of the revised DCCS. After this consultation event, a number of smaller online implementation planning events were held. The aim of these smaller events was to develop more detailed implementation plans for the individual themes in the DCCS and to secure stakeholder input into the detailed implementation plans.
